Crown Lifting – What is it?
Crown lifting is a process which involves carefully removing the lowest branches of a tree. This is a good way of improving light levels and air circulation around the base of the tree. The benefits of crown lifting are that lawns and underplanted flowers can receive more light and air, improving their chances to grow well. It also gives more space and light for patios, decks and lawns. On mossy lawns, crown lifting can assist in drying out the grass which can strengthen the lawn.
Crown Lifting – When should it be done?
Crown lifting on older, mature trees should be avoided or restricted to secondary branches or shortening of primary branches rather than the whole branch being removed, wherever possible. As this would usually involve the removal of large branches growing directly from the trunk, that in turn would leave large wounds that over time can become extensively decayed, causing further long term problems.
